The faculty members and students of the Business Studies Department made an industrial visit to the National Detergent Company SAOG (NDC) at Sohar on 22 March 2018 (10 am-1pm). Faculty members Mr. Santhosh Nithyananda, Ms. Samyuktha and Mr. P. Suresh (Course Tutor) accompanied 20 students (14 girls and 6 boys) of the Cost Accounting course in Advanced Diploma.
NDC is one of the leading FMCG companies in the Sultanate of Oman. NDC manufactures and distributes a wide range of highly reputed and successful brands covering various segments like detergents powders, liquid detergents, soaps, shampoos, allied laundry aids and other household cleaning products. The company has five units Sohar Detergent Powder Unit (Sohar), Sohar Liquid Unit (Sohar), Soap Unit (Rusayl), Sulphonation Unit (Ghala) and Liquid Unit (Industrial & Institutions) (Rusayl).
The group visited the Sohar Detergent Powder Unit. Upon reaching their destination at 10.15 am, there was, firstly, a presentation on the safety measures to be adopted inside the factory by the safety officer of the company. Then the students were taken inside the company by foreman Mr. Abdullah. He explained the production process to the students both in Arabic and in English.
Following a tour of the factory, the students were then taken to the laboratory. There Mr. Abdullah and two other quality control officers of the company explained the process adopted for checking quality, right from the raw material stage to the packing of the finished product. Thereafter, Mr. Sameer Nair, the production manager of the company explained how budgets are prepared in relation to production and sales, observing the variances from the budget, taking the necessary remedial measures and finally how the cost of the product is calculated.
