Engineering Department Holds a Presentation on Rapidwall Construction

29 March 2022

A presentation was organized through the Staff Development Program– Human Resource and Development Committee of the Civil & Architecture Section of the Engineering Department for its staff on 29th March 2022 at 12 noon. The presentation was delivered by Mr. ARIF AHMED ISHAQ AL-BALUSHI, the Plant Manager of Horizons Industrial Development Co. L.L.C. (HIDC), Sohar, Sultanate of Oman. The guest speaker spoke about “Rapidwall Construction: Prefabrication in the Construction Industry. As many as 15 teaching staff and students attended this presentation.

Mr. Al Balushi gave a clear-cut idea on some advanced developed construction materials currently used in the construction industry in Oman. The topic was found very useful by all the attendees as the speaker provided additional insights for the enhancement of their knowledge in the field.

Below are the highlighted topics of the presentation.

Abstract of the Presentation

Architectural, civil, and quantity surveying engineers are designing and constructing various types of buildings.

As time and cost are crucial factors in the construction industry, rapidwall becomes a go-to option for high-rise residential, commercial, and industrial building constructions. The rapid wall is a revolutionary, low-cost pre-fabricated, load-bearing walling product. It is lightweight, (only 40kg/m2 or approximately 12% of the weight of a concrete or brick wall) and is stronger than conventional materials. The rapid wall is a system that has been proven in exhaustive scientific testing to withstand considerable loads and is therefore ideal in earthquake-prone areas. Additionally, the rapid wall can withstand high winds, such as cyclones and hurricanes and the rapidwall panel provides a new method of building construction in a fast track manner as compared to other building methods.

A comparative research study found that in summer indoor temperature, rapidwall building is cooler by 2 to 5 degrees Celsius as compared to a concrete building. The high thermal resistance of rapidwall will keep interiors cooler in summer and warmer in winter saving substantial recurring energy use.
