What Eye-Tracking Tells Us about Reading

9 June 2022

ELC Staff Development Committee of the University presented a thought-provoking workshop on 9 June 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Multipurpose Hall (CC 106).  The workshop was titled “What Eye-tracking Tells Us about Reading’’ and was delivered by Dr. Faisal Saif Ali Alsaidi, the ELC Head of Section (HoS-CTM).

In his talk, Dr. Faisal explained how eye-tracking works, and displayed some of commonly used apparatus for data collection. He then elaborated how he drew on data from eye tracking to revisit questions about reading for gist and reading for specific information. The presenter also shared data visualizations of real-time attentional allocation and linguistic processing gained from recording Level 4 (B1) learners’ eye movement – leading to a discussion on some pedagogical implications for teaching and assessing reading.  The well-received presentation stimulated an active discussion among the attendees and was adjourned at 12:00 PM.
