It has gotten more difficult to capture the students’ interest in this age of social media. For harried teachers who are looking for new ways to keep their students focused, finally there is Quizlet Live. ELC lecturer Miss Autumn Nicole Dinkelman introduced the application to the delight of attendees to her workshop “Quizlet Live: Combining Technology, Games and Collaboration” held on February 5, 2019 in Room 204 of the ACT English Language Centre.
Its website describes Quizlet Live as an “an engaging in-class game where students work in teams to correctly match terms and definitions. The first team to match all terms and definitions correctly in a row wins the game. Quizlet Live is free to all teachers who have a Quizlet account.”*
In the workshop, Miss Autumn explained how to set up a Quizlet Live account, select a set to review and create a game. The participants were then divided into teams which sat together before the game began. Next, the facilitator chose a vocabulary game on various types of phobia. Using their mobile phones, the groups then competed among themselves to reach the most points on the leaderboard.
It was a fast-paced game that had the participants quickly thinking and collaborating and, more importantly, having a fun time. In the end, the Unicorns group of Mr. Jose Mari Almonte, Mr. Abraham Patrick, and Mr. Moutali Abderrahamane bested the rest. Nonetheless, everyone came out a winner as the Quizlet Live workshop proved to be time well spent for the teachers who learned an exciting new way of teaching English to their students.
