Engineering Department Holds Introduction to PLC Programming and Design Webinar

30 Nov 2021

A webinar on Introduction to PLC Programming and Design was delivered by a lecturer of the EE Section of the Engineering Department, Mr. Maharaja Kamatchi, on 30 November 2021 at 12PM to 34 participants. The webinar was organized by the Staff Development Program–Human Resource and Development Committee of the EE Section.

During the webinar, the speaker highlighted the fundamentals of PLC programming and design. Mr. Kamatchi discussed about Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) which is an industrial computer control system extensively used in industrial production line applications. He explained that PLCs can be programmed to perform set of tasks under real-time constraints with superior reliability and performance.

Aside from the abovementioned topics, the speaker also talked about elements of relay, conditions to be followed to draw ladder logic diagram, latching concept used in PLC, timer and counter realization using PLC and sinking/ sourcing concepts. In addition, he also discussed about the creation of a new project program file for a given application and the design of input side/output side circuit diagram as well as the implementation of a prototype to carry out motor time delay operation in the industry with the use of a hardware setup. Lastly, Mr. Kamatchi also mentioned that for the implementation of the application, PLC kit- Allen Bradley MicroLogix 1500 and software RSLogix Micro English are to be used.
