A Guest Lecture on ‘Pre-Fabricated Building Construction and Manufacturing’ was conducted by the Department of Engineering , Civil and Architectural Engineering section on October 1, 2019 at ME 206 .
The invited resource speakers were from Horizon Industrial Development Company (HIDC), namely, Mr. Arif Ahmed Ishaq Al Balushi, Plant Manager and Mr Allen Thomas, Technical Consultant for Business Development. HIDC has its main office at Muscat and a plant at Sohar.
The resource speakers discussed the concept of Rapid Wall pre-fabricated walls and slab construction and installation as well as its manufacturing processes. Rapid Wall prefabricated units can be used as load-bearing walls for individual domestic residential buildings as well as for multi-storey residential buildings. The prefabricated panels designed have fixed dimensions of 12 meters length by 3 meters width and are made mainly of glass fiber reinforced concrete, water resistant plasters and water proofing additives, making it an ideal construction material.
Numerous buildings in Oman were constructed using prefabricated units including the Business Building of Al Musanna College. The prefabricated type of construction has advantages compared to traditional on site construction such as speed in erection, lesser manpower requirements and excellent quality control of its materials.
A brainstorming session followed the session which was attended by all staff members of the section. At the end of the seminar, certificates of appreciation were awarded to the two resource speakers as a token of gratitude from the Engineering Department.
