As part of our staff development programme and contribution towards Oman Mathematics day IV, a presentation was made by Dr. S. Dheva Rajan titled ‘R programming – An Introduction’. It was the first of a series of workshops on R Programming and was held on Tuesday, 25 December, 2018 between 11:30 am -1:30 pm.
Ms. Mini Punnolli, the Head of Math Section, welcomed the participants and presenter. She gave a brief introduction about the appropriateness and necessity of the workshop. She said that from semester II (2018-19), R Programming would be included in the curriculum of the course ‘Probability and Statistics for IT’ and part of the Advanced Diploma course for IT students.
R is a programming language, especially for Statistical calculations, freely available and easy to use. It is a very good alternative for the commercial software SPSS. As this course is especially for IT department students and since they are already equipped with the programming knowledge, R seems to be the better option to increase their efficiency towards programming as well as mathematical skills.
The workshop presented a live training session in programming, hence everyone participated enthusiastically and their interaction was awesome. The highlight of the programme was the creation of wonderfully designed graphs with a single command line.
The workshop ended with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. Krishnan Rajendran, Math Section. Overall, it was an informative and interesting workshop.
