Department of Engineering Holds Advancement in Mechanical Engineering Symposium

On Thursday, 24th March 2022, the Mechanical Engineering Section of the Department of Engineering at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Al Mussanah (UTAS-A) held a symposium for the presentation of student research papers in the field of mechanical engineering.

 

The one-day event commenced with a message from Dr. Ahmed Ali Ahmed Al Shahri, Dean of UTAS-A, and a keynote address on “Roles and Opportunity of Mechanical Engineering in Oman and Abroad” by Dr. M Ramaswamy. The event was marked by high participation from various higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman where 25 research papers under the following three main themes were presented:

  1. Manufacturing
  2. Environment
  3. Industrial Challenges

The University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Nizwa won the award for the Best Technical Poster titled “Measuring Deformation of Deep Drawing by Image Processing Using Matlab and Photogrammetry”. This poster was prepared and submitted by two students: Muslim Khamis Al-Amiri and AbdulMalik Abdullah Al-Zakwani.

 

In the field of scientific research, five (5) student research papers were honoured, namely:

 

First Place (Best Scientific Research Paper)

Columns Studies on Sorption of Organic Compounds from Industrial Wastewater Using Green Algae Ulva Lactuca by Naama Saif Al-Hashemi from the National University of Sciences

 

Second Place

Techno-Economic Feasibility Analysis of Solar Photovoltaic Power Air Conditioning System by the following students from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Shinas:

 

  1.  Fi Alesayi
  2.  Asilah Al-Shiyadi
  3.  Manal Al-Shibliy
  4.  Afrah Alesayi
  5.  Adari Al Balushi

 

Third Place

Comparative Studies on the Corrosion Behaviour of Low Carbon Steel and Galvanised Steel under Various Environmental Conditions Iftikhar Mahfouz Al-Sa’dia from the National University of Sciences

 

The following two (2) other research papers were awarded consolation prizes:

  1. Clean Energy from Plastic: Production of Pyrolysis Oil from Plastic Waste by

          Anfal Abdullah Al-Arimi from the National University of Sciences

 

  1. Design Manufacture and Performance Evaluation of Solar Powered Water Distillation System by Qahtan Saif Al-Shidi from the Military Technical College.
