In line with the Centre’s planned activities for professional development, Dr. Sree Lakshmi, Asya Tonoyan, Mohan Ram Ramamurthy, Othman Al Ghafri, and Murat Kador, lecturers of the Preparatory Studies Centre (PSC), prepared a presentation on the various techniques of teaching vocabulary. This was then presented by Murat Kador to 18 PSC lecturers at the Multi-Purpose Room on September 7, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM.

Mr. Murat highlighted that vocabulary teaching is essential to English language teaching.  He then discussed three (3) valuable techniques that PSC lecturers may adopt and adapt in their classrooms. The first technique that was presented is called mind maps. In this technique, relative images are placed around a central image and linked according to hierarchy and categories, thereby creating a map. The second technique is called word formation. The words are combined or turned into new words in ten (10) different ways. Two (2) examples are abbreviations and creative re-spelling. The last technique is the word web, based on the Frayer model. Resembling mind maps, the central term is linked to the side like a map using definitions, example sentences, synonyms, and antonyms.

After the presentation, the participants formed a team of two (2) or three (3) members and were given a short practice on preparing mind maps.
